I love and agree with every part of this, except I challenge the use of the word "tribalism".
I regard "tribalism" as a neoliberal weapon word and it has rubbed me the wrong way for many, many years. It actually formed in the wasteland of disconnected, managerial thinking that you critique here.
It's a way of talking down to regular folk who have simple human needs, people to protect, and small spheres of influence. There are still tribal peoples in the world, and they have the same enemies that you and I do.
It's like the difference between watching a sober documentary that you'll probably hopefully learn something chin-strokingly vague from, and a wild action adventure that makes no sense but who cares it gets your heart pumping and then you go and get wrecked after.
The human animal doesn't want to make measured planned out decisions, we wanna tear shit up, blow it all on orange and let your mad drunk uncle Donald drive for a bit just for the thrill and because it feels cinematic.
I couldn't even get through the episode. When he started talking about the lefts fixation on trans issues...
Are you kidding me?
The GOP spent something like $200 million on anti-trans ads and somehow this is a problem from the left?
I've lost a ton of respect for Sam Harris over the last few years. He has some glaring blind spots that he's either unaware of, or thinks his audience is too stupid to see.
The biggest thing the Occupy Movement got right was the "99%/1%" framing of the degeneration of capitalism into the predatory mess that it is now. "Culture war" bat-bogeyism is only a distraction from that; the real issue is late-stage capitalism + how it distorts our lives and suppresses us all.
The next left movement should be bearing the standard of "For All"; not just this affinity group or that over the other one, in endless insoluble idpol struggles.
For. All.
Not just 1%, all.
That's who we fight for, against a politics and a system that robs 99% of us.
Good article. Yea ive since Trump won been skeptical that “Kamala lost because of wokeness” because to be honest… was her campaign even “woke”?
Compared to the I’m With Her campaigning of Clinton, Harris didnt really address her identity as a Black Woman as a reason to vote for her, or at least when she did it was in a laundry list of other reasons she was saying to vote for her
In fact I felt in terms of idpol she did more to play the the type of idpol White Americans like than the Progressive Liberal class: the White Dudes for Harris thing seemed like an attempt to say “look, the DNC likes white men!” And not to mention her embrace of the Cheneys and having shifted to the right on the border. She wasnt campaigning with a trans flag, if anything she deflected her one question about trans rights to talk more about Trump
I think the reason Trump won is just because people want what he’s flogging atm

agreed i’d use a different word now as well
Totally. Kamala just had bad marketing.

yeah i think it was a combination of many things between bad marketing and an overall bad policy platform
The lineup of lads they're hiring now, Musk, Kennedy, etc, has such 'assembling the team at the beginning of a slick heist movie' vibes, no? 🍿

Sorry for the rant. Just irritated
Well written and irrefutable perspective! To your point: https://shahidbuttar.substack.com/p/7-ways-democrats-made-donald-trump
